The situation is as follow’s, I have my primary email address which I have had for years and don’t want to change but I also want to use the iPhone and MobileMe for push email. So I configure MobileMe on the iPhone but this of course want to use the MobileMe SMTP server for outbound email. The problem here is that this display’s my MobileMe eMail address which I don’t want people to use.
Now the Mail application on the iPhone does allow you to enter an alternative SMTP server but insists on using SSL, which my ISP doesn’t use on there SMTP servers. Now you can turn this off if you as long as it’s not the primary server, however editing any of the other settings makes it the primary server and enforces SSL. Of course I need to change one of the other settings, namely the authentication method.
This is a major pain in the ass, and one that Apple will hopefully fix soon. Until then I am going to have to create another account on my iPhone just to send email from, and try to remember to use it.
