One thing that has been winding me up with the iPhone is an annoying little bug that prevents me from using any other outgoing SMTP server other than smtp.me.com.
The situation is as follow’s, I have my primary email address which I have had for years and don’t want to change but I also want to use the iPhone and MobileMe for push email. So I configure MobileMe on the iPhone but this of course want to use the MobileMe SMTP server for outbound email. The problem here is that this display’s my MobileMe eMail address which I don’t want people to use.
Now the Mail application on the iPhone does allow you to enter an alternative SMTP server but insists on using SSL, which my ISP doesn’t use on there SMTP servers. Now you can turn this off if you as long as it’s not the primary server, however editing any of the other settings makes it the primary server and enforces SSL. Of course I need to change one of the other settings, namely the authentication method.
This is a major pain in the ass, and one that Apple will hopefully fix soon. Until then I am going to have to create another account on my iPhone just to send email from, and try to remember to use it.

Annoying, and still not fixed (maybe in 3.0?)
Lucky for me I use a cheap SMTP service that can be configured to use, or not use, SSL. But they do , in essence, charge more by counting each encrypted message as 2 messages against my quota. I get 500 a month instead of 1000, which is more than I''m likely to use anyway.
Several years ago I hammered Apple customer support for forcing me to identify myself by my mac.com email address in order to use the apple smtp service. Bad internet citizenship. But to no avail …
Try setting the outgoing port to 465 – works for me
Mark, you might want to try port 587 also:

At the moment everything works, so I am a little wary of playing around with it. Would be interested to hear how others get on however? I also use imap and prefer that as being a Mac user and using mobile me, it means I have my email available no matter where I am.
