Moving Web Server.

So over the next few day’s you might find that the site is a little wobbly. The reason for this is quite simply, my hosting company is moving me from a Window’s Server to a Linux server so that I have more control over the configuration.

Hopefully this wont be too painful, but please be patient for the next few days, it will be worth it in the long term.

Old posts imported.

So I managed to finally import my posts from my RapidWeaver site although it was far from simple. Firstly I had to purchase RapidBlog and sign up for a Blogger account. This enabled me to synchronize all my RapidWeaver posts with Blogger. This however took three day’s as Blogger has a 50 post per day limit and I had 102 posts in RapidWeaver. Once this was completed I had to setup a WordPress blog with WordPress themselves, as there import feature only works with there site and not personal installs of WordPress. So once imported to WordPress I could then export the posts back out in an XML file and import that to my own of WordPress site.

Now it’s not all perfect, some of the links are wobbly because they link to other RapidWeaver pages I had / have (I haven’t deleted the old site yet), and the tag’s and category information needs tidying up. However I will go back over these pots over the next few weeks and tidy them up.

Twitter Updates

Twitter

One of many things people have said they like about my blog is the twitter window that shows them what I’m doing at a glance, especially when I haven’t blogged in a while. Now I haven’t been to good of late keeping this going, and in my defense I have a legitimate reason, but no one wants to hear that so I have reinstated it.

I did try a WordPress plugin that also allowed me to update my twitter feed from the website itself, but it just didn’t have the look and feel people were used to, so I have reinstated the one from the old site.

I must admit I like the look and feel of this much better, but would also like the ability to update the feed from the site so will be looking into ways to add the functionality to the admin section in the future.

In the meantime however I will endeavor to try and make sure I post regular updates, but fair’s fair, you also have to join twitter so I can follow you!

WiFi Woes

Okay so since coming back I have been working on tidying up my home network setup, and for the main part I have it all sorted, but I have one annoying problem that I just don’t seem to be able to resolve, and that’s my WiFi signal.

Now I have a Netgear DG834GT wireless router and previously had two Netgear WG602v3′s setup using WDS. One was wired directly into the DG834GT and the other was installed discreetly in my lounge. With these setup I had 100% coverage all over the house. The problem was the WG602 only supports WEP and apart from the fact that WEP is easily broken, giving people the key to log on is a nightmare.

So while I was in India (Well going through duty free to be precise) I picked up an Apple Airport Extreme, an Apple Airport Express, and an Apple TimeCapsule. These worked wonderfully and provided me with a complete 802.11n network throughout my apartment, and better still allowed my to use WPA2 encryption.

Returning to the UK I thought I would recreate the network I had running in India and that’s where my woes started. I have tried locating each of the devices in different rooms but I don’t seem to be able to get the 100% coverage I need. The main problem is in my lounge where I tend to spend most of my time with my MacBook Air. The really annoying part is that it works pretty much everywhere in the lounge apart from the seat I sit in, where it moves between 100% coverage and 0%. Now I could change my seat, but I simply refuse to do that. I am loathed to spend any more money, but have the feeling that I may need another Airport Express just to provide the coverage I need. Anyone have any other idea’s?

Okay a real quick one, but if you have your own website and want to add the ability to create a WebClip icon for iPhone users Dan Dickinson has a quick easy to understand post on how to achieve it on his site.

After you have created the web clip icon you don’t need to do anything. If you have an iPhone just hit the “+” button and select “Add to Home Screen”. The icon you have created will be used by the iPhone. It’s that easy! Try it here!, warning the icon is my ugly mug!
